Background of the Study
Digital narratives, particularly YouTube vlogs, have emerged as powerful vehicles for storytelling and cultural expression in Nigeria. These narratives blend visual, auditory, and textual elements to create complex layers of meaning that contribute to semantic shifts in everyday language (Olu, 2023). Vloggers often experiment with language by incorporating slang, code-switching, and culturally resonant expressions, leading to innovative semantic constructions that reflect contemporary societal changes. This study examines how digital storytelling on YouTube influences semantic shifts in Nigerian discourse. It explores the ways in which vlog content reshapes traditional meanings, introduces new lexicons, and redefines cultural symbols. The research further investigates how audience interaction and feedback contribute to the evolution of these semantic changes, ultimately affecting how language is used in public discourse (Ibrahim, 2024; Dada, 2025). Understanding these shifts is essential for appreciating the dynamic interplay between technology, culture, and language in Nigeria.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing influence of digital narratives on language, there is limited research on how YouTube vlogs induce semantic shifts in Nigerian discourse. The innovative language practices emerging from vlogs challenge traditional semantic frameworks, leading to potential misinterpretation and ambiguity (Olu, 2023). This lack of comprehensive analysis limits our understanding of the broader impact of digital media on language evolution. Without systematic study, the influence of these new semantic constructions on public discourse remains unclear, hindering efforts to integrate digital innovations with traditional linguistic practices (Ibrahim, 2024; Dada, 2025).
Objectives of the Study
To analyze semantic changes in YouTube vlog narratives.
To evaluate the impact of digital storytelling on traditional language use.
To identify emerging semantic trends in Nigerian digital media.
Research Questions
How do YouTube vlogs contribute to semantic shifts?
What new lexicons emerge from digital narratives?
How do audience interactions influence semantic evolution?
Significance of the Study
This study examines the transformative effects of digital narratives on Nigerian semantics, offering insights into how YouTube vlogs drive language change. The findings will inform linguists, digital media scholars, and content creators on effective communication strategies in the digital age (Olu, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024; Dada, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to analyzing semantic shifts in YouTube vlogs and does not extend to other digital or traditional media.
